This settlement developed on the northen part of the island in the 14th century as a harbour of the ancient village of Pitve . Thick pine forests, sandy beaches, springs, tall poplar trees, all of these rearley seen on Dalmatian islands pleasantly surprise numerous visitors who chose Jelsa as a holiday destination.
Although the settlement prospered in the 19th century due to the ship building industry, it reveals its history and valuable monuments from the time of Greek colonisation and remnants of summer houses and fragments of Roman inscriptions from the Roman period as well.
Jelsa has taken advantage of its location in a sheltered harbour in contact with fertile fields, developing into a naval, commercial and agricultural centre that harmoniously adapted to the flourishing tourist trade.
