Polače
POLAČE
Polače is small village in a bay Polače, is 5.5 kilometers long and 4 kilometers wide. Bay Polače is protected from wind by many small islands which are bare and unpopulated. Polace is located on the west side of Island of Mljet.
Economy is based on a fishing, farming and tourism.
Near a village Polace are Veliko Lake and Malo Lake. Village Polace has own potable water. Other places on island are connected with Polace by road.
Many ancient building remains are located in Polace. They date from 1st-6th century. Monumental palace is most important monument. It has a pier and on the other sides are two polygonal towers. One tower is 20 metres high. Also, there are remains of a late antique fortification on the hill nearby. On the west side of Polace is church from the 5th century, doubled in 6th century with memorial chapel that is attached and extended with vestibule from Middle ages, in good condition and on the northwest is Christian basilica.
