Merag
MERAG
Merag on the island Cres is a seaside town with a difference. It has a ferry port which runs from Merag to Valbiska on the Island of Krk, the shortest distance between the two islands.
Merag also has many unique landmarks including Sveti Bartul Hill, which stands 374 meters high, gives a great view of the city, and is named after St. Bartholomew one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus and the patron saint of the Zminj (a community in Croatia).
Merag boosts many yachting docks and events. When you are there don’t forget to check out the Green tower with the green light located on the East part of the cove near the sea. Also one mile northwest of the harbor is the local Stony Reef which is a scuba divers paradise. The reef is loaded colorful marine life.
The island of Cres itself has been dated back to the Neolithic period (cave habitation). Older hill-fort settlements throughout the island are still encircled by stone walls and date back to the Bronze Age. Some are quite a sight to see for the history buff.
