Islands of Kornati
KORNATI
In the central part of the Croatian Adriatic Sea, between the islands of Zadar and Šibenik there lies an amazing group of islands named the Kornati archipelago. According to a legend, Kornati, a maze of sea passages and islets, were created from a number of rocks God had left over after creating the world. He tossed them into the sea, looked at them, and decided nothing else needed to be corrected.
The major part of the Kornati archipelago was declared a national park in 1980, because of its exceptional beauty, interesting geomorphology, well indented coastline and particularly numerous biocenosis of the sea eco-system.
Nowadays Kornati National Park stretches over the area of about 220 km2 including altogether 89 islands, islets and reefs within approximately 238 km of coastline. Although there is a relatively large number of an island, the land part of the Park encompasses less than ¼ of its whole area, while the rest belongs to the sea eco-system.
National Park Kornati abounds in unique beauties of both natural and cultural heritage. What should a visitor see in National Park Kornati?
