Starigrad and surroundings
STARIGRAD - PAKLENICA
Located at the foot of the barren south side of Velebit mountain, the straggling resort of Starigrad Paklenica is one of the most unspoilt areas along the Adriatic and the handiest base for those guests interested in visiting Croatia's Paklenica National park. At the northern edge of the village of Starigrad there is a small, charming harbour and some 500m south there's also the national park office, very useful if you are planning a trip up the mountain.
Paklenica National park consists of two limestone gorges; Velika Paklenica and Mala Paklenica. While Velika Paklenica has beautifully marked paths, Mala Paklenica has deliberately been left underdeveloped in order to protect its status as a relatively untouched wilderness.
The Starigrad's coastline offers some really lovely stretches of shingle beaches, there's a good selection of grill restaurants in town and also plenty of opportunities for entertaining excursions. One example is the popular local boat trip up the Zrmanja River! Unmissable.
