Korčula
KORČULA TOWN
The exceptionally beautiful old town of Korčula lies beside the sea on the north-east end of the island Korčula. The old medieval part of the city was built on a small oval peninsula, a Baroque new suburb spreads under the old city walls, and newer town quarters stretch along the shore to the east and west of the old centre.
Today the city has about 3,000 inhabitants, most of them living in new parts of the city. Despite its recent developement, Korčula town still preserves a neat beauty which has very few equals along the adriatic coast. The town is an enjoyable ensamble of architectonical monuments, filled and lined with shops, bars and restaurants, and those looking for good beaches will not be disappointed.
Korčula town offers some rocky parts of the coast where you can enjoy the inviting waters fo the Adriatic, but just 8kms south at Lumbarda you can find some of the best beaches in Croatia. Prizna Bay, for example, is a wonderful 200m sandy beach, backed also by a couple of cafes.
For fans of medevial festivals, we would like to mention that Korcula is famous for its Moreska Sword dance - a performance which you can enjoy in the town all year round.
