About destination Barbariga[hide][show]
BARBARIGA
Barbariga is a tourist village on the south-western coast of Istria, Croatia, on the Barbariga peninsula or Punta Cissana (named after the lost ancient settlement of Cissa).
It is located 22 km northwest of Pula, northwest of Faana and Vodnjan and southwest of Bale. Chief occupations include farming (olives), fishing and tourism. A regional road connects Barbariga with Peroj.
The remains of a Roman summer mansion from the 1st century have been found on the coast. The floors of the mansion were adorned with mosaics of two or more colours, while its walls were adorned with frescoes with vegetal and figural decorations. The remains of an ancient oil rafinery are located in the mansion's vicinity.
It is an area with great promise for development. Apart from the actual village of Barbariga (which comprises a small shopping/restaurant centre and a modest housing estate) the area is virtually unpopulated. It boasts a beautiful coastline backed by (relatively) flat land, which is unusual in this part of Croatia, where the mountains generally crash straight into the sea.
