About destination Brela[hide][show]
BRELA
Brela has become one of the most exclusive and most wanted tourist destinations in Dalmatia during the last few decades of the 20th century thanks to the attractive natural environment, clean pebble and sand beaches, romantically arranged along a side where a promenade swerves between pine trees and modernly comfortable hotels, guest houses, apartments, boarding houses, catering and other modern tourist facilities.
High over Brela is the rural village Kriak with a wide offer of homemade specialties. The clean and clear sea and the care of the environment are best confirmed by numerous tourist awards.
The Punta Rata beach has been carrying the Blue Flag for already 8 years. The Blue Flag is the greatest international acknowledgment for a clean sea and environment. Lifting the Blue Flag on the Planet Earth on June 5 is a festive occasion. St. Stjepan is the day the Brela celebrates the day of the municipality.
A long time ago, the inhabitants of Brela established their existence by raising grapevines and the renowned “Maraska” cherry on the steep terrace-like land. With the development of tourism, the interest for agriculture decreased and in 1935 a society was established for making Brela more beautiful.
But the thousand year old agriculture was preserved in numerous gardens and property on which the present inhabitants of Brela grow olives, grapevines, oranges and lemons.
There is a construction preserved from the time of the Illyrians over the village of Škrabii along with several piles of ceramic, old pottery, excerpts of tombstones and money from the Roman era in Soline. The small church which was dedicated to the Lady of Karmela was built in 1730.
On the Biokovo mountain over Brela is the Hercegova fortress.
