Krapanj
KRAPANJ
This smallest and most densely populated island of the Sibenik archipelago, is unique in many things.
It is only 300m far from the mainland where Brodarica is situated. Besides its small surface of only 0.36km2, Krapanj it is the lowest island on the Croatian Adriatic - 1.5m above sea level!
It is unique for its inhabitants, too who are known sponge divers.
The former inhabitants of the island were exclusively agricultures but their fields were on the mainland. Besides fishing, in the 18th ct. they began with sponge diving.
The brave people of Krapanj have preserved the 300 years old tradition of sponge harvesting - catching and processing sponges. The monastery of Sv. Križ [St. Cross] is a museum that has a collection of sponges, corals, amphorae and antique tableware. The monastery preserves other valuable protected artifacts (a painting of The Last Supper, the Black Madonna on the Throne).
This island has typical Dalmatian architecture - narrow stone houses and narrow streets.
